The Single-Record HRIS vs BambooHR

The BambooHR alternative built for Canadian payroll. Meet Workzoom.

Workzoom covers Canadian payroll natively: CRA-ready filings, T4, CPP, ROE, in the same system as HR, workforce, and talent. No middleware.

Workzoom unified HR and payroll dashboard, compared with BambooHR

AThe short answer

Workzoom is the Canadian and Caribbean alternative to BambooHR with live payroll for Canada, the US, and the Bahamas on one employee record at $4 per suite per month, plus HR, Workforce, and Talent built to handle the wider Caribbean. BambooHR is a US-built SMB HRIS with no Canadian and no Caribbean payroll, requiring a separate payroll provider in every market outside the US. Named live customers running HR plus payroll on Workzoom include County of Renfrew, Cable Bahamas, and Island Luck.

BambooHR has no native Canadian payroll, forcing Canadian organizations to manage a separate payroll provider alongside it, and its pricing is quote-based with payroll and benefits as paid add-ons, so the all-in cost is hard to model up front.

Workzoom replaces both BambooHR and a separate payroll provider with one platform: Canadian payroll, scheduling, and HR on one invoice.

"3 people deal with close to 1,000 people. It has been seamless integration of our timekeeping, our HR and payroll systems. No need for manual data transfer."

01 Feature comparison

How they compare.

BambooHR is a well-built US SMB HRIS, and this is an honest comparison, not a takedown. Every Workzoom claim links to an independent source; every BambooHR claim links to BambooHR's own site, with the date we checked it. Where BambooHR is genuinely strong (HR UX, US SMB fit), the table says so. The core difference is structural: BambooHR is HR with payroll as a US-only add-on; Workzoom is HR and payroll on one record across Canada, the US, and the Caribbean. Read the footnotes.

Feature Workzoom BambooHR
Database architectureHR, payroll, scheduling, and talent read and write the same employee row, with no export or sync layer between modules. Single employee record Sync layer across separate databases
Coverage and compliance
Canadian payroll (CPP, EI, T4, ROE)BambooHR's payroll add-on runs US employees only; it does not process Canadian statutory payroll. A Canadian organization on BambooHR runs a separate payroll provider (Ceridian, Payworks, or ADP) alongside it. Workzoom runs native Canadian payroll, CPP, EI, federal and provincial tax, T4, ROE, on the same employee record as HR, in production at County of Renfrew (900 employees). Native Not offered1
Caribbean payroll (NIB, NIS, PAYE)BambooHR runs no Caribbean statutory payroll. Workzoom runs live NIB and C10 in the Bahamas at Cable Bahamas and Island Luck, with engines built to handle NIS, PAYE, NHT, and Health Surcharge across the wider Caribbean, on the same record as Canadian and US payroll. Bahamas live + wider Caribbean engines Not offered1
US payrollBambooHR offers US payroll as a paid add-on to the HR plan, for US employees only. Workzoom includes US payroll on the same employee record as Canadian and Bahamian payroll, so a cross-border group does not split payroll across systems. Included, multi-country record Paid add-on, US only1
Platform and scope
Shift scheduling for hourly workforcesBambooHR does not include shift scheduling; operators with hourly, multi-site, or shift-based staff source a separate tool and integrate it. Workzoom ships scheduling in the Workforce suite, reading the same employee record as HR and payroll. Included Not offered1
Talent: performance, learning, successionBambooHR offers performance management as a paid add-on and does not ship a native learning-management system. Workzoom includes performance reviews, learning records, certification tracking, and succession in the Talent suite at the same per-suite price. Included (full Talent suite) Performance add-on, no native LMS1
One record vs stitched stackBambooHR is HR, with payroll, benefits, and time as add-ons or integrations. A Canadian operator typically runs BambooHR plus a separate payroll provider plus a separate scheduling tool, three contracts, three support lines, integrations to maintain. Workzoom runs HR, payroll, workforce, and talent on a single employee record, so a pay, shift, or benefits change reflects everywhere without a CSV between modules. Single employee record HR + add-ons / integrations1
Price and value
Pricing modelWorkzoom publishes $4 per employee per month per suite, $16 all-in, with $0 setup and month-to-month terms. BambooHR does not publish a public rate card; pricing is quote-based, with Payroll and Benefits Administration priced as add-ons on top of the HR plan. $4 / suite, published Quote only + add-ons1
Platform and scope
HR user experienceBambooHR is well regarded for clean HR UX, a genuine strength within its scope. Workzoom prioritizes functional completeness, HR, payroll, scheduling, and talent on one record for Canadian and Caribbean mid-market teams. If a polished HR-only portal with no payroll requirement is the whole need, BambooHR is a strong fit. Functional completeness Strong HR UX1
Proof and trust
Named multi-country client proofWorkzoom publishes named clients running HR plus payroll on one record with audited metrics: County of Renfrew (Ontario municipal, 900 employees), Cable Bahamas (850, payroll cut from 5 days to 1.5), Island Luck (850 across 60+ locations). BambooHR's published roster is US SMB HR; it does not show Canadian or Caribbean payroll outcomes. Canada + Caribbean payroll metrics US SMB HR roster1
Security certificationBoth hold recognized certifications, a genuine match. BambooHR publishes SOC 2. Workzoom holds its own ISO 27701 privacy certificate (valid to November 2028) and runs on AWS's SOC 2 / ISO 27001 infrastructure, with reports available under NDA. ISO 27701 cert (to 2028) + AWS SOC 21

02 Platform

Why one record changes everything.

The feature gaps above all trace to one root difference. BambooHR keeps HR in its own database while payroll, scheduling, and talent live in other tools. Workzoom runs all four on a single employee record, so the work that happens between systems simply disappears.

BambooHR + a payroll tool + a scheduling tool + a learning system

The stitched stack

  • Re-key every new hire, raise, and termination into each separate system.
  • Export from HR and import to payroll every single pay cycle.
  • Reconcile the mismatches when two systems disagree on one employee.
  • Build and maintain integration middleware between tools never meant to talk.
  • No single source of truth, so the reports never quite agree.
  • An audit trail scattered in pieces across four vendors.

Workzoom

One employee record

  • Every module reads and writes the same employee row.
  • No exports, no imports, no sync layer between HR and payroll.
  • A change in one place is true everywhere, instantly.
  • One source of truth across HR, payroll, scheduling, and talent.
  • One audit trail for the entire employee lifecycle.
  • One login, one bill, one team that configured it all.
Why Workzoom

Where Workzoom stands out.

Native Canadian payroll, not a US bolt-on

BambooHR does not offer Canadian payroll. Canadian organizations must integrate a separate payroll provider, managing two systems and two support relationships. Workzoom includes native Canadian payroll (CPP, EI, federal and provincial tax, T4, ROE) in the same platform as HR, scheduling, and talent. County of Renfrew, Northern Sunrise County, Silvera for Seniors, and DCAG all run Canadian payroll plus HR on one Workzoom employee record.

Live Caribbean payroll BambooHR doesn't run

BambooHR has zero Caribbean payroll. The platform does not run NIB in The Bahamas, NIS plus NHT plus Education Tax plus HEART in Jamaica, NIS plus Health Surcharge in Trinidad and Tobago, or any other Caribbean statutory engine. Workzoom runs live Caribbean payroll in the Bahamas on the same engine as Canadian and US payroll, with statutory engines built to handle Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Antigua, and Anguilla. Named live Bahamas customers include Cable Bahamas (850 employees, payroll cut from 5 days to 1.5) and Island Luck (850 employees across 60+ gaming locations, 8 payrolls per week).

Published pricing you can model on day one

BambooHR does not publish a public rate card; pricing is quote-based, with Payroll and Benefits Administration priced as add-ons on top of the HR plan, so the all-in number is hard to model before a sales cycle. Workzoom is month-to-month at $4 per suite per month, $16 all-in for the full HR plus Payroll plus Workforce plus Talent stack, with no setup fee and no lock-in. The published rate is the rate Canadian and Caribbean customers pay on year five.

Single record, not stitched stack

BambooHR is HR-only. Canadian and Caribbean organizations running BambooHR pay for a separate payroll provider, a separate scheduling tool, and a separate learning platform. Each integration is a failure mode. Workzoom runs HR, Payroll, Workforce, and Talent on a single employee record. When a pay rate, shift, or benefits eligibility changes, every surface reflects the change instantly, with no CSV exports between modules.

Support included after go-live

After BambooHR onboarding, additional support and training often come at extra cost. Workzoom support is included at the base price and does not change after implementation. Greg Belmore at County of Renfrew described the experience on G2: 'A qualitative ROI was achieved within a week of beginning implementation.'

The honest fit

Who Workzoom is for, and who it is not.

Picking the right system is as much about ruling out a wrong fit as finding a right one. Here is where Workzoom fits, and where it does not.

Built for you

Workzoom is the right call if

  • You have 50 to 5,000 employees and want HR, payroll, workforce, and talent on one employee record.

  • You operate across the Caribbean, Canada, the US, or some mix of them, and want one system instead of two.

  • You want your own team running payroll, with Workzoom specialists configuring your statutory rules and staying on after go-live.

  • You want published, predictable per-employee pricing you can model on day one.

  • You want named-client proof with real production numbers, not a logo wall.

Be honest with yourself

Workzoom is not the fit if

  • You want payroll handled for you by a bureau.

Workzoom is the platform your own team runs: it calculates and prepares statutory output, and your team submits. If you would rather hand payroll off entirely, a managed-payroll service is the better fit, not us.

  • You are a 20,000-plus employee global enterprise needing deep multi-entity configuration and a large consultant programme.

That is Workday and SAP SuccessFactors territory, and we are honest about it. Workzoom is built for the 50 to 5,000 range where fit, speed, and a real relationship beat raw configuration depth.

04 Switching

How do you switch from BambooHR?

Most teams are live within 4 to 8 weeks with dedicated implementation support.

01
Export from BambooHR and payroll provider
We import employee profiles, org structure, time-off balances, and document history from BambooHR, plus pay history and tax data from your Canadian payroll provider.
02
Configure Canadian payroll
We set up your payroll rules, pay groups, deductions, provincial tax tables, and any union agreements. Your first Workzoom payroll runs in parallel with your existing provider.
03
Cutover and cancel both systems
Once payroll is validated and your team is confident, you cancel both BambooHR and your payroll provider. One system, one invoice. Most BambooHR migrations complete in 45-60 days.

Capability gaps

No. Workzoom includes native Canadian payroll (CPP, EI, federal and provincial tax, T4, ROE, and CRA-ready remittance statements) in the same platform as HR and scheduling. BambooHR does not offer native Canadian payroll. Canadian organizations using BambooHR must integrate with a separate payroll provider such as Ceridian, Payworks, or ADP, managing two systems, two support relationships, and two update cycles when CRA rules change.
No. BambooHR has zero Caribbean payroll. The platform does not run NIB in The Bahamas, NIS plus NHT plus Education Tax plus HEART in Jamaica, NIS plus Health Surcharge in Trinidad and Tobago, NIS in Barbados, or any other Caribbean statutory engine. Workzoom runs live Caribbean payroll in the Bahamas on the same engine as Canadian and US payroll, with statutory engines built to handle Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Antigua, and Anguilla. Named live Bahamas customers include Cable Bahamas (850 employees, payroll cut from 5 days to 1.5) and Island Luck (850 across 60+ gaming locations, 8 payrolls per week).
Yes. Workzoom includes performance reviews, goal tracking, succession planning, learning records, and career planning in the Talent suite alongside HR, payroll, and scheduling on one employee record. BambooHR's performance module is a separate add-on; Workzoom's Talent suite is included in the $4 per suite price with no extra fee.
Yes. Workzoom runs a single employee record with live payroll in Canada, the United States, and the Bahamas, and statutory engines built to handle the wider Caribbean (Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Antigua, Anguilla, the Cayman Islands) plus HR and Talent for the United Kingdom. BambooHR is US-built with no native non-US payroll, so multi-country teams on BambooHR run separate payroll providers per country.

Switching from BambooHR

Consolidation is the most common reason teams move to Workzoom. Canadian organizations on BambooHR are also paying for a separate Canadian payroll provider, managing two systems, two support relationships, and two data integrations. Workzoom replaces both with one all-in-one platform built for Canada, with named municipal, healthcare, indigenous, and non-profit customers running HR plus payroll on one employee record, including County of Renfrew, Silvera for Seniors, Northern Sunrise County, and Ktunaxa Nation Council.
Yes. Workzoom imports employee profiles, org hierarchy, time-off policies and balances, and document metadata from BambooHR. The exports are well-structured. If you have been running BambooHR alongside Ceridian, Payworks, or ADP for payroll, we also migrate pay history and YTD tax data from your payroll system. Most BambooHR migrations complete in 45 to 60 days, implementation included.
Most BambooHR migrations to Workzoom take 60 to 90 days. We run parallel for 1 to 2 pay periods if you also need native Canadian or Caribbean payroll on cutover. Document migrations, time-off balances, and org hierarchy import directly from BambooHR exports.
That is between you and BambooHR. Workzoom is month-to-month so you can start at any point. Many clients run both systems during the parallel migration period and cancel BambooHR after a clean cutover.

Comparison

BambooHR is known for strong UI/UX, and that is a genuine advantage within its scope. Workzoom prioritizes functional completeness for Canadian and Caribbean mid-market teams. If your primary need is a clean HR portal with no payroll requirement and no Caribbean operations, BambooHR ships clean UX for that envelope. If you need Canadian or Caribbean payroll, scheduling, and HR on one record, Workzoom is the practical choice.
Workzoom savings vary by organization size and which payroll provider you use. A 200-person company paying $8 per employee per month for BambooHR plus $6 per employee per month for Ceridian payroll is spending $14 per employee per month across two systems. Workzoom's all-in pricing for HR, Payroll, Workforce, and Talent is $16 per employee per month with implementation included, and consolidation eliminates the time cost of managing two integrations and two renewal cycles.
For Caribbean organizations, yes. BambooHR is a US-built SMB HRIS with no native Caribbean payroll, no NIB or NIS or NHT engines, and no Caribbean-domiciled support. Workzoom is a 25-year platform with live Caribbean payroll in the Bahamas since 2021 and statutory engines built to handle Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Antigua, and Anguilla, and publishes named Bahamas customer outcomes: Cable Bahamas, Island Luck, AML Foods (900 employees), Sun Oil (525). BambooHR's customer roster does not include Caribbean enterprise organizations with paired production metrics.

Deep dive

Workzoom vs BambooHR, the BambooHR alternative.

01

What BambooHR is and isn't

BambooHR is a US-focused SMB HRIS. The product is well-designed for what it covers: employee records, performance management, time-off tracking, basic onboarding workflows. The team has built strong UX for HR generalists in companies up to about 1,000 employees, and the value proposition is real within that scope.

What BambooHR is not: a payroll platform for Canadian employers, a scheduling tool for shift-based workforces, or a talent suite with built-in learning management. The product covers HR, with everything else handled by integrations or add-ons. For Canadian operators especially, the consequence is a stitched stack: BambooHR for HR, a separate Canadian payroll provider, another tool for scheduling, another for learning. The integration burden falls back on the buyer.

02

The Canadian payroll gap

BambooHR does not offer Canadian payroll. The platform integrates with Canadian payroll providers, but the data flow between HR and payroll lives across two systems with different ownership, different support relationships, and different update cycles. When CRA rules change, both vendors update at their own pace. When an employee record changes in BambooHR, the change has to propagate to the payroll system before it affects pay.

Workzoom runs HR and Canadian payroll on a single employee record. The connection between systems is not an integration. It is the same system. CPP, EI, provincial tax, year-end reporting all reflect current CRA regulation natively. For Canadian organizations, the architectural difference removes an entire class of failure modes that a BambooHR + separate payroll stack carries.

03

Scheduling and timekeeping: the forgotten layer

BambooHR does not include shift scheduling. For organizations with hourly workforces (healthcare, hospitality, retail, gaming, multi-site operations) the scheduling gap is structural. The buyer has to source a separate scheduling tool, integrate it to BambooHR for employee data, integrate it to a payroll system for hours, and accept that any change in any of the three systems creates risk in the other two.

Workzoom includes scheduling as part of the Workforce suite. Schedules read the same employee record as HR and payroll. When a shift changes, the change propagates without requiring an integration to maintain. The schedule-to-clock-to-pay flow runs inside one platform, which is the model the BambooHR stack approximates through external tools.

04

Pricing, transparency, and the all-in cost

BambooHR's base HR plans are reported in the $13+ per-employee-per-month range, though the company does not publish exact pricing. Payroll integration, performance management, time tracking, and benefits administration each carry separate fees or add-on charges. The all-in cost for a Canadian organization running BambooHR plus a Canadian payroll provider plus a scheduling tool typically lands well above Workzoom's $16 per-employee-per-month maximum.

Workzoom's published pricing of $4 per suite per month is the actual number. All four suites together come to $16 per employee per month, fully loaded, with no setup fees and no long-term contracts. For SMB Canadian organizations evaluating BambooHR, the math is worth running on a paper-napkin basis before any vendor calls.

05

When BambooHR is the right call

BambooHR is a genuinely good fit for US-only SMBs with no shift workforce, no Canadian operations, and no near-term plans to consolidate payroll into the same platform. For teams that want a strong HRIS without rolling everything together, BambooHR ships clean UX and reliable functionality.

For Canadian organizations, multi-site operators, healthcare and hospitality employers, or any company that wants to retire the stitched stack: Workzoom is the architectural alternative. The right test is a 30-minute walkthrough against your current stack cost. Bring your BambooHR quote and any adjacent tooling invoices, and we will compare them directly.
